Zoo Day 2013

In early July, we took the kids up to Salt Lake to go to Hogle Zoo. We met up with Clayton's parents, his sister Monica and her family, and his sister-in-law Rachel along with her Audrey. It started out ok, well, actually, the minute we got Winston out of the car he started running. In the parking lot of course, right in the roadway. Luckily (ha?) he fell so I could catch him, unfortunately he got a nice bonk on his forehead. A few tears and one bloody shirt later (Clayton's), we were on our way.

They set out African drums near the elephant show area for people to play on.
Winston was still a bit subdued from his fall, and didn't put his heart into it like I thought he might. Normally, he freaking loves drumming.
You can see his sad little head in these shots. Notice, however, that his forehead is still shaped correctly. Foreshadowing. (Get it? Foreshadowing? Forehead? Ok, dumb.)
Kathy, Eleanor, Natalie and Rachel flashing gang signs. That's what you get when you invite your So-Cal relatives.
Well, this is where the group candids and any animal shots end. Clayton had to leave us to attend a meeting in downtown Salt Lake so we went inside the covered building to watch Rocky the polar bear. We let Winston out of his stroller and he takes one, two steps then trips over a kid and falls flat on his forehead. Again, for the second time in about 3 hours. It was that super slick, hard concrete too, and when he hit it, it sounded like someone dropped a watermelon on the floor. I raced to him and he was livid, naturally. Instantly a giant button popped up on his head. Like, a two or three inch round area that had sharply defined sides. Like this. Ugh.
A bunch of other moms came dashing over and all of us check his eyes and try to assess the damage. I am losing it. I was honestly scared that this was the bump that would make him forget everything, that he would be our special needs child. It didn't help that he had a pretty good head bonk just the month before when he walked in front of the swings. That time he threw up and everything, but I didn't take him in, so I wasn't going to take chances this time around. Also, remember, he hit his head in the same spot just three hours prior! I know I sound dramatic now, and spoiler alert: he's fine, but right then I was horrified. It was such a sick fall. You could see it in the eyes of the other moms that they were freaked out too, all of them were encouraging me to take him to the hospital. Poor Winston, he was hysterical and wasn't calming down. He's never cried like that before. I left Kathy with the girls and ran with Winston to find a first aid station or Rex, who I was hoping could drive us to the hospital. Well, this was hideous for more reasons that just poor, hurt Win. If you haven't heard yet, I am pregnant, and was right in the midst of the "morning" sickness phase, so I was already nauseated and miserable. I asked a few employees, but they said there wasn't a first aid station. (There is.) I got some ice which he wouldn't let me put on his head of course. Add in an unreachable husband, triple digit weather, stress and trying to carry this very heavy two year old (33 pounds!) who is losing his mind, and it made for a pretty pathetic scene. I made it from the bears to the elephants before I had to just sit down and phone for help. I had to wait for my groups to catch up to me and then we all made it to the exits. Rex gave Winston a blessing in the car, which helped me probably more than him, then he fell asleep on the ride to the U of U emergency room (it was past his nap time, so I wasn't terribly worried about this). It was nice that there is an emergency room so close to the zoo, and one that specializes in just children!

Here is my poor boy in the car on the way there. At this point the bump had lost it's defined edges and instead had just made his entire forehead swell to twice it's size.
And a profile view, I don't have another for comparison's sake, but trust me, this is wrong.

We get to the hospital and he wakes back up and starts screaming again. He just wasn't being Winston and I was heartsick. We get sent to a room and the doctors come and check him out. His is spazzing out at everything they try to do, he wont talk or anything. I knew that for the most part they would just monitor him, but it was comforting to learn that the front of the head is best if you have to get bonked, as the skull is thickest there. They could tell it hadn't fractured and said it was ok for him to go to sleep. That they would wait a few hours and then try letting him eat. Of course, the second they leave the room, he pops up off the pillow and says in his usual cheerful voice, "HI GRANDPA!" Oh man. That kid. He proceeded to play with his toy motorcycle, check out the whole room, scoot chairs around, do all his tricks and answer every question correctly, and basically assure us that he was right as rain.

Here he is pushing chairs around. He would peek out the window there and say, "Oh! So many!" Talking about how many doctors and nurses there were.
We got someone's attention to let them know about the sudden change and so they let him have a popsicle right away. Here he is with grandpa Rex enjoying it.

 Grandpa got the other half.
We still had to wait a few hours before leaving, and Rex and I were both starving, but we made it through this little adventure at the hospital. It was nice to have Rex there for support, and I learned a ton about him that I never knew. Some fascinating stories, if they were mine, I'd wear them on a shirt telling people how cool I am. But that's Rex, quiet and humble. And can I say, all the doctors and nurses were so lovely, I really appreciate what they do and what they know. And I appreciate a Heavenly Father who truly looks after us in our time of need. I am so grateful for my kids and I recognize that most people don't have such positive experiences at the emergency room. I wish I could say that I have a new found patience for Winston's shenanigans, but I think now I just have an increased knowledge of how quickly that kid can break himself. I hope his armada of guardian angels do not depend on just my faith, ha ha.

Allie's Birthday and the ZOO!

For Allie's 6th birthday, we made her a doll that looks like her. Sort of. You can get basic doll forms at Hobby Lobby and I learned how to make doll wigs that you then sew onto the form. We painted on shoes and a swimsuit that look like ones she already owns and made her an outfit. I was going to make her a matching skirt, but like all my projects, 90% = done to me. She liked it. It got Eleanor wishing for Christmas for a doll that "looks just like me". (She got a knock-off American Girl doll that looks like her instead.)

Every girl got a cute little Lego figurine set and they all went to Pizza Pie Cafe after. As my first time going there, all I can say is, "What have I been doing with my life?" So good for a crazy buffet place!
Later in September we went to Hogle Zoo. I hadn't been in years, and my kids had only been to the zoo in Michigan.
Giraffes!
Eleanor spent most of the time telling me about how "that one is the daddy, that one is the baby..."
Posing on the cute bronze statues around the zoo. They are nice and warm.
Did I mention that Winston outgrows all his clothes, like, overnight? His pants were hilarious floods, when I swear they fit him fine the day before.
Eleanor seeing her favorite thing in the whole zoo, the crocodiles. She's liked them since she was teeny tiny and loved Peter Pan. Remember? For months after this outing she would talk about the crocodile who lived in "his jar". (His glass enclosure, jar... close enough.)
Doing the crocodile jaws.
Tigers, bronze and in real life. Hogle zoo really is impressive.
Winston's frowny face. He doesn't do it as much now, but I think it was a communication thing for him. He couldn't say what was wrong so he'd just frown, now he can talk more, less frowns.
Eleanor and random kids enjoying the polar bear, "Rocky". He would float back and then swim up really fast right up to the glass then push off and do it all over again. Probably 20 times in a row, it was really fun to watch.
 Eleanor and Rocky!
The zoo is one of my favorite places, we miss our Potter Park Zoo back in Lansing. Now that the weather is nicer again in Utah I think we will be saving our pennies to go again.

Meijer Day at Potter Park Zoo

FYI, I am more behind on blogging than I thought. I just spent an hour sorting through pictures on my computer... I will try to post maybe one a day for a few days or something awesome. Don't hold me to it though. Anyhow. When Win was just two weeks old, Potter Park Zoo had a day sponsored by Meijers, where it only cost $3 to get in. Woo hoo. Off we went. Win was a dream in his car seat the whole time, and Eleanor had a blast.

And, can I just say? After wandering amongst the "great unwashed" (pilots used to always call the passengers that) I came away feeling smarter and better looking than I normally feel. Yeah, there were some real winners there, but I'm not here to be mean. On to the pictures.

Eleanor wasn't too keen on the big mascots walking around.
Cute as always.
Posing like a monkey.
If a monkey looks forlorn, halo-lit and precious. This kind of thing melts me.
And here are some video snippets of E and the mandrill mascot. If you remember, we have reason to be wary of mandrills.

E and the donkeys. Funny girl.

Eleanor's 2nd Birthday Part 1

On March 12th Eleanor turned two! After a quick birthday wish in the shower? we headed to the zoo. We did the same thing last year, we figure it's a great (free in March) tradition. Here is the link to the pictures from last year- we tried to recreate a few of the shots for comparison.

The weather this year was a bit colder than last, but there were still lots of animals to see. Like the goats, who could smell our McDonald's (I know, we're awesome.) breakfast.
After visiting the goats and the donkey that, according to Eleanor, liked her shoes- ("He like my shoes!" over and over...) we went to the Lion House to warm up.
Clayton and E checking out the Red Ruffed Lemurs who can shriek louder than the most annoying car alarm.
Outside looking at ostrich or something. This is one of the shots we tried to recreate from last year.
The great part of taking 20 shots to get one to match last year's, is that you get wonderful new shots like this one. If this doesn't make you happy, you are dead inside. Or you are normal, but come on, it's pretty cute.
Last year we got to go with our wonderful friends the Oversons. As they live in Utah now we got the chance to go with our beloved neighbors the Johnsons. Here is Eleanor with her favorite neighbor (no offense to the others, but we all know where we stand) Angela, or "Ala".
And here are the rest of us, including Timmy, Grant and Zach.
If you watched the video from my last post, then you saw how crazy the Mandrills were acting that morning. We spent a good amount of time there enjoying their antics. At one point the biggest of the Mandrills decided there had been enough monkeying around (hardy har har), so he walked over and planted himself in front of me and "presented" his backside. That was all, just put his bum up to my face on the window and left it there for a good minute or two. I'm not quite sure what the message was, but I feel tickled that he picked me out to receive it. Or maybe not so much. Gross and gross.Yeah, yeah, I see you.

Clayton having a staring contest with the resident lion. It's easy to act all tough with that glass there to protect you, but that lion should watch his back in the wild.
Our little (growing as you can see) family outside with the tiger.
And our own little tiger.
Love her! Can't believe she's two!
Little Grant!
Only Zach had the roaring part down.
Back at home we tried to interest Eleanor in her presents. A few of them were left over from Christmas as she was super spoiled then, and couldn't possibly process any more toys. The same thing happened here. She opened one and was good to go.
Of course, when that one is Buzz Lightyear, what more could you want?
After present, she got her birthday "nap" (or play in her crib time) and then got up just in time for her party. That will have to be the next post!

The Mandrills are Crazy Happy It's Eleanor's Birthday

I will post a whole lot more of Eleanor's birthday in a day or two, but I had to get these two videos up today. This is Eleanor and our neighbors Zach & Grant visiting the Mandrills at the Potter Park Zoo on her birthday. The Mandrills seem to think Eleanor and Zach are either new friends, new enemies or holding out food for them. (Eleanor's red mittens.) Whatever it is, they are putting on quite a show for the kids.

This next part is funny as Zach asks the Mandrill "Do you like me?" with all the sincerity that a three year old can muster, and Eleanor asks "Dat mine, dad?" Yes, of course it is Eleanor. Everything, we've found so far, is yours.

Random Zoo Day

Will be catching up for a while here. So don't be fooled by green grass and blue skies. This was a while ago. We are now happily ensconced in a winter wonderland. Actually, we enjoyed a lovely mild autumn and the zoo is free through late fall and winter! So Eleanor and I met up with a group of friends to enjoy a day with the animals. Not much to say about the zoo. Animals are cute and kids like them. So here are a few of the pictures.

This is an old beanie of Clayton's that shrank and is now Eleanor's go-to hat.
Loves the goats.
Ninguins! Or Penguins, I guess.
It's sweet how she enjoys the zoo more and more as she gets older.
She held her little stuffed lion for most of the visit.
Still to come? Clayton's parents come for a visit! How we spent our Thanksgiving weekend! We travel to Utah! Christmas, Christmas and more Christmas! Pregnancy good times and New Years... oh you get the point, I'm super behind.
