The Only Book In The World

The title initially was how I referred to a book I just read. Escape by Caroline Jessops. It engulfed my life. Jenni had read it before me so as I came upon new stories of horror I would run to her with shock and anger to have her say "Which book?" And I would reply, "The only book in the world". But more on that later.

So much for July. Ah well. I have a ton of things I would like to blog about, but now they are all a little old. Maybe I'll catch up here soon. I really just haven't been at a computer much lately. So what will I blog about tonight? Um, the new thing that is consuming my life.

Twilight.

I bought the book at a second hand shop about a year ago and have brought it with me on numerous trips. However, I never started it. It kind of felt like homework- so it would sit in my suitcase until I came home. Well on Thursday I finally started it and on Friday I finished it. I made it till Saturday night before I bought New Moon. Today is Sunday and I seriously contemplated faking sick so I could stay home from church and read. I went. Grudgingly. Then I spent a lovely two hours at my in-laws this evening being completely anti-social. My sister in-law is staying with us while she is in town and she just finished book one. We only have the one copy of book 2 so we are taking turns. Which is why I am blogging now.

So. About this book, (Don't worry, no spoilers. Unlike the &%$#@ radio station I happened upon the other day. Grrr.). Why am I so fascinated? Why is everyone? That was half of the reason I waited so long to start it. I was the same way with Harry Potter. I hate to be a total sheep in these types of things. But back to the book, a few things bugged me. First of all, Bella is a freaking whiner. She gets so mad at nothing at all- it's irritating to me. I hate when characters fly off the handle for no reason. It starts to taper off, but in the beginning it was constant. She was always upset at what anyone had to say.

And... well, I guess that's about it. Ya. I love it. So it's not Tess of the D'Urbervilles. (My favorite "big girl" book.) So what. I will be buying Eclipse and the new one tomorrow. And now I am counting the days until the movie comes out. Baaaa.

P.S. The radio station I was listening to also said that husbands should take their wives on a picnic and take off their shirt to reveal a body-glitter covered torso. Um...ya. If Clayton did that I would have him institutionalized. And Parker is a tool.

P.S. The movie appears to be perfectly cast. Cedric Diggory? You betcha.

Oh Marianne! I love that you love this series! It's easy to see that you are not the 'sheep' type of person and so I am sure it bugs you to like them! However, aren't they entertaining?! I hate how seriously so many people are taking them, but what fun, fast, reads. (Breaking Dawn came out yesterday and I am 300 pages into it!) Enjoy!

I was so excited when I saw you had a blog post! yay!

So, I am the biggest loser on earth for not being in to these books. I wish I could say I was trying to be cool by not liking them, but I'm way too lame for that. There must be something I'm missing. I shall try again.

Also? Parker is such a tool. Hate. Glad you agree.

Also also. (my version of p.p.s.? I don't know). Anyway, what's your schedule like? I have nothing going on, you should come over sometime. We'll have lunch, watch crappy tv, it'll be awesome).

We did the audio version of it on a road trip (but only bk 1). While I am irritated that this author is now a bajillionaire for doing something either of us could have, I didn't hate the book. It was fun, especially for a 12 hour drive. Our only complaint was the overdone theme of Edward rescuing Bella. How many different ways are there to demonstrate that this girl needs to be protected and saved at every turn? Answer: about as many ways as there are to describe the color of someone's butterscotch eyes, and how much more or less butterscotch they were than the day before. (in other words, lots of ways.)

My very emotionally invested friend suggested that maybe this was because Bella's character had spent so much time rescuing and taking care of everyone else (read: her parents). I guess. I'll let it pass. Hope she grows a pair in the next book though. That's all I can say. And now that there's no question that we are aware of how attractive Edward is, perhaps the author can chill out about it.

While the SSB blog has become the internet version of the kid in high school that cracked everyone up in class once, but enjoyed the attention so much that he couldn't stop without beating every joke to death and eventually becoming the dread of everyone around him...I will concede that it was a fine moment when one of SSB's cronies mockingly joked that they were "SOO going to neglect their kids" when the new one came out. If I had a dime for every time I've heard a SAHM crack that one, I'd be rich enough not to resent Stephenie Meyer.

I LOVE THAT YOU ARE GETTING SO INTO THIS SERIES. I FOR ONE HAVEN'T STARTED IT YET - BUT EVERYONE AROUND ME HAS. IT ISN'T MY TURN YET. I WANT TO BE ABLE TO GO THROUGH THEM LIKE I DID H.P. YOU KNOW READ THE FIRST 2 OR 3 AND THEN WAIT TIL THE NEXT ONE COMES OUT. OR, LIKE WE DID WHEN CLINT AND ALISON LIVED IN CA, BUY THE BOOKS ON CD AND LISTEN TO THEM AS A CAPTIVE AUDIENCE DURING A GOOD LONG ROAD TRIP.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!! HOPE IT WAS FUN AND MEMORABLE. LOVE, CLEVENGERS
